Gingerbread House

My hubby was out of town this past week again on business so I invited my best friend Rachel and her little one (Megs best friend) Kaya over for another one of our fun sleepovers.  It was supposed to be for one night but quickly turned into three nights of crazy fun.

So over the next couple of days I’m gonna blog about what we did starting with the Gingerbread House from hell

OMG I had no idea what a pain in the tushy this project would be.  Rachel was the first to brave it while I cataloged the event with my crap trusty camera.

Rachel was very smart putting a nice thick layer in the bottom of the easy stand tray to give our  house a better chance at staying erect.  I’ve seen a lot of Gingerbread Houses that would be condemned by the building dept. due to poor foundations. ~Grin~

The icing was very thick and hard to squeeze, it was a monster.  We had cut a thicker hole in one corner and a smaller one for detail in the other, so when it did decide to soften up I was constantly getting what looked like little bird poops in my lap.  Anyway, back to the girls….

Meggers was first to have a go at squeezing the icing on her wall of the Gingerbread house and did quite well.

Kaya was quick to follow.  Both girls giggling and talking about the different candies they were planning to use to decorate their Gingerbread house.

The house started to take form as the girls took turns icing and piecing the walls together.

Finally it was time to put the roof on and the girls were super excited to get started on the the decorating.

What we didn’t realize is the house has to sit for 15 minutes to dry before you can start decorating it.  DOH!

What to do? What to do?  Wait!  The girls haven’t had dinner yet… How about breakfast for dinner?  French Toast coming up!

It was really cute to sit down and watch the girls talk about what they were going to do with their side of the Gingerbread House.

After a hearty dinner of French Toast and Maple Syrup it was time to decorate our Gingerbread House.

Rachel had about had it with the icing so I decided to try my hand at it.   It wasn’t too bad don’t know what Rachel was complaining about..lol

I realized we had put one of the roof pieces on upside down, but we decided it made our house unique.

The girls decorated the house with all the different candies.

Added a few finishing touches, a snowman and a gingerbread man…

and TA DA this was our end result!

Even though some of our candies started to slide it wasn’t bad for our first Gingerbread House right?!

The Girls were definitely proud of their little masterpiece!

  1. Ohh I’ve been there done that – those projects you have such high expectations for to create beautiful memories – then reality sets in and you’re thinking “this was supposed to be fun :0(” But those little girls’ Big smiles make the whole thing worth while and you end up with beautiful memories after all!

The house turned out really cute – and the girls look like they had a blast :0)

  2. That turned out great but I can see how all of the details made it a pain to do. I can’t wait until my kids are old enough to do stuff like that… thanks for sharing the pictures.. now can you send it to my house so I can eat it?

  3. Frogs mom ~ thanks! the girls did have a blast and even though it was a pain in the butt, it was definitely well worth it.

Halfasgood ~ Definitely not what I expected! However lots of fun. Umm would totally send it to you but the girls were sticking their fingers in the icing and licking them (double dipping so to speak..lol) so ya might not wanna eat it. ~Grin~

  4. Wow, those look yummy! Can you eat it when you’re done or are you supposed to throw it out after a couple of weeks? I never know the answer to that one!

  5. DM & Sprite ~ We’ll probably start eating it at some point I’ve noticed a little snow missing here and there from Meggers. I think you can eat it, it’s all icing no glue or anything. I think it’s designer’s choice..lol
