Man having a baby?

PhotobucketSo I saw an advertisement for this topic and decided to watch Oprah and see what all the hoopla was about.  I’m confused… I don’t know why there’s so much interest in this story, in my mind, even though legally she is considered male he still has all the makings of a woman, uterus, ovaries, etc.  so technically it’s not a medical phenomenon because he was born female.   Don’t get me wrong I completely respect that she has decided to live her life as a male and identifies with that gender and in no way am I disgusted by this nor am I opposed to her choices I just don’t get the media frenzy and wondered what other thought?

I worry about posting this because I don’t want lots of hateful posts, I respect their choices and they seem like a loving couple who want to love and raise a child  (I will not approve any comments I feel are racist or disrespectful).  They say they’re going public tell their story first, but I wonder if the public backlash they may recieve will be worth the publicity?  Why does this story deserves more media attention than any other gay couple trying to adopt or deciding to conceive?  It makes me wonder if and what People Magazine may be paying for this story?

  1. It technically is a medical miracle because “he” has been on Hormone therapy for sometime now, meaning he, while still posessing ovaries, uterus, etc, should not be ovulating because of the intense doses of testosterone being ingested/injected.

It’s also interesting to note because the baby appers, thusfar, to be healthy. With the amount of hormones coursing through his blood stream, the child stands a chance that his or her hormone levels will be forever altered by his or her parent’s choice.

I am not condeming them for choosing to have a child, I just think this might not have been the safest method to choose.

  2. I disagree with you on the medical miracle part because he does still possess the ovaries, uterus, etc. and was born female, but I understand your point.

In my opinion it would be more of a medical phenomenon if say my husband were to get pregnant because he was born male. I’m sure any woman that’s had a baby will tell you it’s a miracle, “the miracle of birth” so to speak.

When it comes to the testosterone I think they said he stopped taking it in order to get pregnant, but your right, he still has facial hair, his voice is still altered by the testosterone, so to be able to ovulate is amazing, but personally I wouldn’t call it a miracle.

You do have to wonder if the testosterone will have any repercussions on the child, hopefully their doctor is on top of that and they have a healthy child that they can raise and love.

    Thanks for posting a comment.

  3. Everytime I see an article about this guy, I feel exactly the same way! He was, at one point a female. He was born with a uterus, ovaries. So at least biologically, he is partially female. So it’s really not a miracle. And I really don’t think it’s such a big deal.

  4. Yeah, I see your point too. You’re welcome, I always think it’s interesting to see people posting about the news because instead of a news channel’s perspective, you get reactions.

The story is totally over-sensationalized, personally. There have been plenty of transmen to get pregnant for whatever reason(s) and just haven’t been the media-hungry person that this individual is.

I mean come on, if you’re a copy editor writing a headline, you’re going to want something catchy. “Man? Pregnant!” is totally something that boosts sales. I guess I’m not phased by it because I have worked in a news environment. I think it’s silly that they got tons of attention, but maybe they’ll get some free diapers out of it, haha. 🙂
